Managing MS Symptoms with at Strive PT & Wellness

Is Multiple Sclerosis Controlling You?

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. The disease damages the protective covering (myelin) that surrounds nerve fibers, causing inflammation and scarring (sclerosis). This damage to the myelin interferes with the transmission of nerve impulses, leading to physical, cognitive, psychological, and visual impairments. These impairments can significantly impact daily life and cause difficulty with activities of daily living (ADLs).

This incurable neurological condition can affect a person's vision, balance, coordination, and other physical abilities. You might feel intimidated by the feeling that MS has taken the driving seat in your life and will drive you anywhere it wants. But all is not lost. Our team of experienced medical professionals provide treatment to patients with MS to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life.

Common Symptoms of MS

The symptoms of MS can vary greatly from person to person and can range from mild to severe. Some common symptoms include:

Muscle Weakness: This is a common symptom of MS, and can range from mild to severe. People with MS may experience weakness in their legs, arms, or other parts of their body, making it difficult to carry out everyday activities such as walking, writing, or dressing.

Numbness or Tingling: Many people with MS experience numbness or tingling sensations in their limbs, which can be uncomfortable or painful. This can also make it difficult to feel temperature changes or touch sensations, and can increase the risk of burns or injury.

Difficulty with Coordination and Balance: MS can cause problems with coordination and balance, making it difficult to walk or perform other tasks that require fine motor control. This can increase the risk of falls and injury.

Bladder and Bowel Problems: MS can cause bladder and bowel problems, such as difficulty starting or stopping urination, incontinence, or constipation.

Vision Problems: MS can cause vision problems, such as double vision, blurred vision, or partial vision loss. These symptoms can make it difficult to read, drive, or perform other tasks that require good vision.

Cognitive Issues: MS can also cause cognitive issues, such as memory problems, difficulty concentrating, and slowness in processing information. These symptoms can make it challenging to carry out everyday tasks, such as work or school, and can impact relationships and quality of life.

Fatigue: Fatigue is a common symptom of MS, and can range from mild to severe. People with MS may experience exhaustion, even after getting adequate rest, making it difficult to carry out everyday activities or work.

Depression and Mood Swings: MS can also cause emotional and psychological symptoms, such as depression and mood swings. These symptoms can impact relationships, quality of life, and overall well-being.

Heat Intolerance: Also known as heat sensitivity, is a common symptom of Multiple Sclerosis (MS). People with MS may experience worsening of their symptoms when exposed to warm or hot temperatures, such as during hot weather, in a hot bath, or from physical activity. Heat intolerance in MS arises because changes in body temperature can affect the speed at which electrical signals travel along nerves — and that rate of speed is already slower in demyelinated nerves. This disruption of the functioning nerve fibers may lead to worsening of symptoms. This can include increased muscle weakness, difficulty with coordination and balance, blurred vision, and fatigue. It is important to note that not all people with MS experience heat intolerance, and the severity and duration of symptoms can vary greatly from person to person.

Diagnosis for Multiple Sclerosis

Diagnosing MS can be a challenging and time-consuming process, as the symptoms of MS can mimic those of other conditions. The process usually involves a thorough medical history, a physical and neurological examination, and a series of tests, such as an MRI or spinal tap. A definitive diagnosis of MS is usually made by a specialist, such as a neurologist.

Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

There is currently no cure for MS, but there are treatments available that can help manage the symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. These treatments can include:

  • Medications that reduce inflammation and slow the progression of the disease
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation to improve mobility and function
  • Occupational therapy to help with daily activities
  • Speech therapy to address any speech and language difficulties
  • Psychological counseling to help with emotional and psychological well-being
